Britz is not the only campervan company in Australia.
A general search for campervan or motorhome hire in Australia will turn up pages of results – but way too many of them will offer up Britz as the answer. It would have you thinking that Britz is the only company in Australia to hire from. Well the good news is there are a number of others to think of before you commit. The truth is there are over 60 campervan and RV rental companies in Australia and similar amounts in New Zealand.
Whilst Britz campervans is the dominant player and do, in fact, offer quality vehicles, do not believe that you have to rent from their family of campers – Britz also owns Maui, Mighty Campers(formerly Backpacker Campervans) and Explore More Campervans. The most obvious competitor is the Apollo family of companies which comprises of Apollo, Cheapa Campa and Hippie Camper. Hippie recently rebranded and uppped the ante in the youth market with their vehicles. If you are in this market then you definitely want to research these guys – particularly if you were thinking of going with Wicked Campers (Hippie are much better). Also in the youth market are Travellers Autobarn, winner of the Golden Backpack Award in 2011, offering a range that suits the low to medium budget, also with a recent re-brand and a new model of camper. After that, the market gets very crowded with also-ran’s, however keep an eye out for Awesome Campers who seem to getting more market share for the lower budget.
But Britz really specializes in the middle to upper class, so who is there apart from Britz in these areas. Well, as mentioned, Apollo is going toe-to-toe with them but you will also find plenty of medium size companies in this range. Kea is the under-marketed gem in this range. They have taken the high road and all their vehicles are going for luxury. In particular their Trakka converted VW van is the ultimate in luxury in the 2 person category. It costs a pretty penny, but what a fine campervan!
An undervalued player in the motorhome market is Around Australia Motorhomes. These guys are going for the luxury market and hitting their target. No bare bones skimping with these guys. Luxury Winnebagos is the style here. Large families or people that like luxury and taking their time are going to love these guys. Independently owned, they can be hard to find in general web search – unlike the dirth of results for Britz. Of course you can find Around Australia Motorhomes on www.ecampervanhire.com :)
Another company worth mentioning is Energi Motorhomes. This company is a creeper and one to watch out for. You can read more about them on the Energi Motorhome review page. They are unlikely to come up in a general search for campervan hire in Australia, but if you can add them in to group you get quotes from, you might no be disappointed.
The last one to mention is Camperman Campervans. This company has seen rapid growth and their number of campervans grows. They are set in the budget to mid range of campers and as such offer some decent competition to Britz.
So, if you are looking for a campervan or RV hire in Australia, don’t be fooled that Britz is the only company that will give you good service for the right price. It is worth digging a little deeper and seeing what else is out there in the market.
