Aotea Campervans is a small, family-owned campervan rental company that centers itself in Christchurch, New Zealand. They have a limited fleet that caters for 2 persons or 2 with a child on a budget.
About Aotea Campervans
If you don’t mind exploring New Zealand with an old maintained vehicle, Aotea is a great company to go for. But if you are looking for the latest comfort from new campervans with a better luxury, this company might not be an option for you. Their campers tend to be older models and this keeps the price down. But you'll be surprised that this 'budget rate' already comes with amazing inclusions such as complimentary tour tips, free airport/ hotel transfer in Christchurch, and extra driver. Plus, their staff are multilingual; they can speak English, French, and German.
Aotea Campervan vehicles aren’t new. Their fleet focuses on old vehicles that are still in good shape. Most of their campervans are more than 10 years old. Though well maintained, you can expect to get some wear and tear on the interiors. While they try their best to maintain their vehicles, many years of people sitting on the cushions and opening the cupboard will inevitably make the vehicles uncomfortable to use. But even with their older range of campervans, these are self-contained units, which means you can go freedom camping around NZ. Plus, a camping table and chairs are already provided for free. So, before you freedom camp using their vehicle, don't forget to get information about the rules that may vary depending on each district.
Mazda E 2000 2(+1) Berth Solar Campervan
This 2005 campervan is very handy to drive. It sleeps 2 adults and 1 child with its full internal bedroom that has a double bed measuring 1.52m X 1.90m plus an overhead single bed. This campervan comes with amenities such as 12v refrigerator, 2 ring gas cooker, fly screen, sinks with pressurized hot and cold water, and a solar panel for charging the refrigerator when the vehicle is not running. Since this is a self-contained unit, a porta potty is already included.
Unlike most NZ campervan rentals, they require a compulsory $20/day for an excess of $2, 000 for drivers 21 years old and above and $3, 000 for drivers with less than 1-year driver's license. If you want to further reduce the excess to $500, you can pay an additional of $15/day, which already includes cover for windscreen and underfloor. If you just want windscreen and underfloor damage, you can add $7/ day on top of the compulsory $20/day. The payment for the insurance, including the bond of $500 will be taken upon vehicle pick-up.
As small as the company is, Aotea Campervans focuses on one campervan style for rent, which is a 2+1 berth unit. So, if you are looking for a company with a huge selection to choose from, Aotea is not one of them. Still, you may want to consider their fleet of old yet well-maintained and self-contained vehicles. Their rates are targeted at the budget market. Plus, they have some interesting inclusions in every rental that makes them worth the try.
Generally, Aotea Campervan rentals is a good company offering competent vehicles aimed at a budgeted cost. With few exceptions, the vehicles haven’t been modified, but still, the company offers a great level of flexibility that is quite good for moderate-budget couples.
