Bunk Campers offers a good and extensive selection of modern vehicles across cities in England, Scotland and Ireland. From budget campervans to luxury motorhomes, and budget couples to bigger families, for sure there's something that would catch your eye. However, read the fine print carefully and better yet prepare for either a spectacular holiday or a spooky one.

What Bunk Campers Tells Us

As one of the largest campervan & motorhome hire rental companies in Ireland, the company has extended its service to Scotland and England with a fleet of 100% company owned vehicles. They cater all types of renters, whether you're looking for a budget or fancy trip or something just enough for two or a group up to 6. This business that was established in 2007 has its fair share of yay and nay. It's true that they have lots of depots across the UK and Ireland, however, there has been lots of issues about misleading pick-up and drop-off locations. Not only that, it appears that their policies are deliberately inconsistent, making happy customers become mad renters after their holiday.

Fleet

At Bunk Campers, they take pride having a fleet of modern vehicles that can cater small to big groups. These campervans and motorhomes are updated every year and are fitted and kitted for a comfier rental hire. If you are in a budget or with some extra dollars to spent, the economical units or the stylish vehicles are set to make you happy. But, these campervans are rather flashy, acting as the company's moving billboard. Yes, a more discreet holiday isn't something to look forward to from them.

Vehicles

Roadie

The Roadie is the most appropriate choice for 2 persons in budget but do not want to let go of the campervan experience. Well, with this compact campervan, you can now travel the scenic roads of the UK, Ireland, and Scotland on a low cost budget. Despite of the lower rental cost, the inside of the unit is equipped with areas to cook, relax, wash and sleep on board. But this one isn't at all appealing 6 footers because of the limited internal height. The next option, the Nomad might be fitted for you.

Nomad

The 2 berth Nomad is a vintage VW with modern fit-out and standard features ranging from the spacious double bed to the useful kitchen. Its iconic pop top allows you to stand up comfortably. Based on a Blue Motion technology, this is the most fuel-efficient campervan on offer, plus not too much on the budget! You may add some extras to your rental to make it a bit convenient like tent for added space and porta potty for more comfort.

Aero

Another 2 berth campervan is the Aero and Aero Plus.  These bright and compact units feature all the comfort of a fancy home yet still economical and easy to drive. The main difference between the two is the extra space and comfort provided by the Aero Plus. The Aero features a permanent double bed while the Plus gives you the option to choose a fixed double or twin beds and an added swivel chair behind the driver's seat. But all in all, the two have almost the same layout with a spacious living area, well-equipped kitchen and full bathroom.

Ranger

For the 4 berth category, let's start with the budget and compact Ranger. Often noticed by the most spectators at campsites and festivals, the Ranger is the best value VW campervan for groups of 4. The VW may be known as a vintage vehicle but this iconic model from Bunk Campers is brand new, providing modern features like electric refrigeration, high top roof, on board heating and BlueMotion technology. Though this does not come with a fixed bathroom inside, you may avail of a portable toilet and tailgate. Overall, this is a vintage VW with a  modern twist.

Vista

Fancier and comfier, these are the major charms of the Vista and Vista Plus. These motorhomes are fitting for a touring family with its 2 large double beds, shower and toilet facilities and contemporary interior. If you're looking for a more economical and compact unit, the Vista is the one for you. Offering extra internal height because of its high top features, this unit makes a fantastic choice for taller passengers. The Vista Plus, on the other hand, takes pride of its luxury appointments and larger layout; hence giving more space for walking around. Designed with a sleeker finish, this campervan is furnished with 3 burner gas hob instead of the usual 2 burner, bigger fridge and fresh water tank capacity, added electric hook up and more garage storage space.

Europa

Fitting for longer rentals, the Europa is a 2-4 berth low profile motorhome that can give you maximum comfort and space all throughout your holiday. Because of the bright, apartment layout as well as the spacious dining quarters, the unit appeals to families or couples who will be on the road for quite a while. A fixed rear bed and additional drop down double bed are your sleeping choices at night. The kitchen has enough storage spaces for your goodies and the fancy facilities are nicely furnished to make your holiday more smooth and comfortable.

Grande

With a maximum sleeping capacity of 6, the Grande offers great value and perks for groups sharing a budget or families travelling with 4 kids. This motorhome provides you with more space than ever as well as full range of amenities you can think of, from its modern kitchen to spacious lounge. The sleeping areas located at the rear bunk beds, fold-out dinette and cab-over feature bigger beds for a cozier retreat.

Insurance

The security deposit required by the company will be through your pre-authorised credit or debit card, which will be collected at the time of delivery. The amount depends on the rented vehicle, but this can be reduced by availing one of their insurance options for additional dollars. There are two insurance options you can avail of: the 50% reduction and 75%. This means that your security deposit will be reduced by either 50% or 75%. There is also a separate coverage for windscreen, mirror and tyres as well as additional drivers for £10 per night, per person. The company, however, cannot provide insurance for drivers under 21 and over 75 years of age, and there would be an additional of £20 per day for driver/s aged over 21 years to 24 years and over 70 years to 74 years.

Reputation

Yes, Bunk Campers' wide array of modern campervans and motorhomes is very fascinating not to try. These vehicles are close to brand new models, including those iconic VWs. However, the fleet is just one of the significant features before renting a campervan. Reputation is very important, and the company is quite shaky when it comes to providing a reliable customer service and assuring a smooth campervan hire. Negative reviews about dodgy company policies and delayed refunds are shaping their name.

Summary

Bunk Campers extensive selection of rental units across cities in England, Scotland and Ireland is by far one of the few positive features of the company. Other than that, you need to rent with open eyes and ears if ever you decide to hire a unit from them.

"Estafa"

"Dangerously absent 24/7 roadside service, totally dodgey company"

  • Reviewed 4 months ago

DO NOT BOOK with this company. There is no 24/7 service and they will make no effort to resolve an issue that comes up and also take whatever extra from the deposit they possibly can. They really are fraudulent as the other reviews said, and I wish I had read these reviews before booking. We paid quite a lot for this motorhome hire (Dublin office) on the impression they had 24/7 roadside service, as outlined all over their website and in booking materials. However, when we had an issue resulting in no heat, hot water, cooking, etc. for two nights with young children in cold Autumn weather - we could not reach anyone until the third day. Funnily enough, they mentioned wanting "good reviews" upon picking up the motorhome at which time the issue was apparent (the lock to the propane door not working properly, which the next day completely broke) yet Owen completely glossed over struggling with the lock and went forward in handing over the vehicle. When calling the 24/7 roadside service line - which is actually a call center, not a direct line to the company, the call center could not get in touch with anyone from the company until the third day. I even emailed eht company on the first night of the issues, but no response until the third day upon which the response was not roadside service - but instructions for us to break the lock to get into the propane area.

"BEWARE - Stay away from this company.$2978.62AUD Gone"

  • Reviewed 5 months ago

In April 2023, we booked a vehicle from the Dublin branch for a 9 day hire in September.
We also paid more than $500AUD for the additional insurance to reduce the accident liability.
First Big Mistake. After they had taken our money, they took us out the back to collect the vehicle. It was the most beat-up vehicle on the lot - the whole driver's side of it was stowed in (later found the sliding door wouldn't lock or unlock) the passenger mirror was held on with tape etc - I guess they calculated our accident liability was minimal so not much to be gained from giving us a dent free vehicle.
Our rental agreement did not include a vehicle condition report - see above for why

Terms & Conditions: 5.6 Bunk Campers shall supply the Vehicle in a clean, safe, and roadworthy condition that complies with Bunk Campers’s quality assurance program and all regulatory and registration requirements applicable in the country of the Pick-Up Location.
We also found, during the first afternoon of using the vehicle, that the refrigerator was not operational and the very large bicycle rack attached to the rear of the vehicle - this was neither requested nor required, caused the rear windows of the vehicle to be inoperable - they were not able to be opened.
On our first night, we intended to set up the onboard toilet system, only to find that the required chemicals were nowhere to be found. We emailed the Dublin branch seeking the location of the toilet chemicals inside the vehicle - but we never did receive a reply to this email.

Terms and Conditions: 14.1 Prior to the collection of the Vehicle by Guest, Bunk Campers will carry out an inspection of all onboard components to ensure they function correctly.

Worse was to come.

We collected the vehicle at 1400hrs on the Monday.
By 1100hrs on the Tuesday - not even 24hrs later, the vehicle itself became inoperable.
We called the International Freephone number 0044 1525 878 000.
Seven times. Over the course of two hours.
While we were stranded in the rain in a service station car park.
While the free phone staff were able to log the fault with Bunk Campers Dublin, they were unable to provide us with a useful contact number for the roadside assistance service or the direct contact for the Dublin branch office.

We googled the roadside assistance number and called them ourselves. I understand from conversations with the roadside assist operator, the Dublin branch was aware of the situation but had not bothered to call us to confirm we were safe and provide us with a plan for resolution.
Terms and conditions: 14.3 If an onboard component malfunctions during the Hire Period, Bunk Campers will attempt to resolve the issue without requiring Guest to return to the Pick-Up Location.

While my partner was dealing with the roadside assistance operators, negotiating with the tow truck operators as to whether the vehicle should be recovered back to the Dublin branch or to the manufacturer,  I was able to reach Mark from the Dublin branch on the phone and speaker phoned him to the tow truck driver so he could direct the vehicle to be recovered back to Dublin.
I asked Mark to call me back with a plan for what Bunk Campers intended to do.
After half an hour without any further contact, I called the Dublin branch again and Mark provided me with four options:
Stay with the stranded vehicle and seek transport with the tow truck to get back to Dublin where Bunk Dublin would provide a replacement vehicle. I questioned the type of replacement vehicle and was advised it was a larger vehicle which I advised was most certainly not within my capability of managing on unfamiliar roads. - expected time of arrival 2.30 pm
Stay with the stranded vehicle until such time as the tow truck recovered it and then wait for Bunk Campers in Dublin to drive the larger (unsafe because it was outside my confident capacity) - replacement vehicle out to us - expected time of arrival after 5 pm.
Stay with the vehicle until such time as it could be repaired.
Further, if we would not accept the replacement vehicle, then under the Terms and Conditions, Mark advised, Bunk Campers had no further contractual obligations to us. They would recover the vehicle and leave us where we were.
The stated caveat to all these options was that either the stranded vehicle, us, (to pick up the replacement vehicle) or both needed to be back at the Dublin branch by 5 p.m. otherwise we would be staying the night in the recovered vehicle (without power, refrigeration or services) in the Bunk Camper Dublin driveway.
Unhappily, as we sat in that rainy service station carpark for more than 6 hours - we knew were all trust in this company had gone and we decided if we were to salvage our once-in-a-lifetime Ireland holiday, it was not going to happen with Bunk Campers.
Despite repeated emails to the 'guest experience' team, the "management team" has yet to even bother to respond to our request for a refund for the 8 of the 9 nine days we did not have use of the camper - despite Bunk Campers being clearly in breach of their own terms and conditions. 1772.69 EUR = $2978.62AUD Gone

"My advice: don't book! I don't want other people to suffer from Bunkcampers."

  • Reviewed 2 years ago

Horrible. We had booked a van with them because the reviews on the Internet suggested that the quality of the vans was good, but we made a mistake. The only thing Bunkcampers cares about is money: don't respect their own terms and conditions, no commercial gesture, very far from the van spirit, dishonest people.
Indeed, we had booked a van to Ireland, and unfortunately Ireland introduced non-essential travel restrictions over the dates of our rental because of the soaring number of cases of covid linked to the delta variant + our country of departure imposes exit restrictions + and finally our flights were cancelled. We informed Bunkcampers of the situation very early so that other lucky travellers could book the van as soon as possible and enjoy it. Despite the fact that this is against their terms and conditions (booklet "book with confidence thanks to our coronavirus guarantees".......), Bunkcampers refuses to refund us and is extremely unpleasant. We will have to file a complaint.
Beware and think twice before booking with them, my advice is really to prefer another one!

"Disappointed"

  • Reviewed 3 years ago

Having been recommended Bunk Campers from a friend, I regretfully hadn't looked at online reviews.

Unfortunately our experience had disappointments throughout:

we were given a different van than we ordered on arrival and were told our van wouldn't be available until the next day.
we had paid full insurance (which was supposed to include table & chairs) but they forgot to put them in, which meant we had to turn back an hour into our journey.
we weren't given any disinfectant to wipe down the van (as previously advertised, so we ended buying it ourselves)
there was no window wiper fluid available so we had difficulty with visibility on the windscreen
They never answer their phone
we were given the car with a quarter tank of petrol (instead of a full tank as advertised)
there was a bottle of water and old parking tickets left behind in the van prior to boarding
we were not given a bikerack with our rental (as advertised) which resulted in us having to put them in the back and lock them to a nearby bike rack each night - not ideal.
Lastly, and most frustratingly, there was a little sand left on the hard floor after our trip from which we were charged a €200 cleaning fee - clearly that amount is not warranted for the quantity of dirt left in the van.

"Yeah, that was fun."

  • Reviewed 4 years ago

We rented the Vista for 2 Weeks in May 2019 from Dublin, Ireland for 2,260€ (incl. the all-in bundle, as i wasnt aware how the car was maintained and i am someone who wants to buy a full-insurance-paket)
Now.. well..

Here are a few things that didnt work in the Vista in the time of our holiday:

- The button for the water/waterpump was broken, so we had no Water and water-pressure cold or hot, in the shower or in the toilet in our whole holiday. That means if you pay for a shower, a toilet and a sink that should work, well, you dont get what you paid for.
- The darkening-blind on the right side of the car was broken and fell off (was appearently "fixed" with a black duct-tape, very sexy.)- we could not darken the campervan. Funny thing if you have to stick a towel to the window to darken it for paying over 2000€.
- The announced plastic-wheel-blocks where not in the campervan, so we could not, or just very barely, get the van on a straight level for the whole holiday (as ireland has not the best leveled campspots out there), so that was pretty annoying.
- The right windshield-wiper was broken, the cap was not on it so it got loose and flew away, right when we needed it the most. I had to drive to an open garage and get it fixed. yay, that was fun.
- The kitchen gas-hob was not working properly as the automatic-firestarter was, of course, broken and you had to be very careful with the glasstop, as it was already (left side, screws) very loose and not fixed in a proper way.
- The lights couldn´t be switched on and off independently as the upper light at the fold-down bed (which is not supposed to be like that, i have rented the same car once) was either all-lights-on, or all-lights-off.
- The speaker at the bed didn´t work.
Not even talking about the quite poor cleanliness of the camper, the esp which in every 3 motorstarts meant that it´s not working anymore, the mold or black dirt in the ice-compartement, the nervous wheel which thought it dances samba if you drive faster than 60, the wheels which started jumping when driving faster than 70 (no proper balance-weights) and so on.. and on.. and on.

A few of the above things are just little-things that annoy but are not a real problem, others are essential things. I documented everything above in Video and Photo.

After 16 E-Mail they generously offered me a refund of 170€ as "goodwill gesture" for not getting what i paid for.

I just can tell you (and i rent a campervan evey year since years) - don´t book your camper with bunkcampers (or now apollocamper) as they will not give you what you paid for. It was very dissappointing - we will of course continue with our campervan-rental-holiday every year, but there are so many good and reliable camper-van-rentals out there, i HIGHLY recommend NOT to use bunkcampers and use another company.

Greetings.

"Simply avoid Bunkcampers"

  • Reviewed 5 years ago

Rented an aero for 5 days from Dublin. It’s safe to say I will never be using Bunkcampers again and I do urge others to stay well clear aswell. We came into the office on a high looking forward to our trip. You quickly are told of 2 options - either pay £324 to essentially limit your liability to £500 if there is any damage to the vehicle. Or don’t pay anything but you could be liable for Upto £2000. Very quickly you are sucked in and after countless stories of people wrecking vans etc etc ‘9/10 vans apparently come back with damage’ . You quickly go from excitement to sheer fear of even driving the van. The sum of £60 per night we paid and thought was reasonable value for a budget trip , it’s clear costs can very quickly spiral for life in a budget campervan. As they say 90% of vans come back with damage, so you pay an upfront cost but the potential extra costs , could end up being huge and the odds on you paying these huge inflated fees are massively staked against you as the customer.
So We paid £324 and left. From then on you are at a point where the excitement for the trip has gone and it’s all stress and worry. When we returned the van there was a tiny dent less then a five pence piece on the van side which wasn’t our fault. We were quickly told this is the £500 gone not forgetting the £324 we have already paid so £824.
So In total our 5 day trip in a campervan cost £1,168.
The campervan and company are certainly not worth that money.
I leave feeling like I’ve been fleeced and angry. Please don’t make the same mistake, it’s a con and there are far better holidays/companies to put your hard earned money into.

Customer service by staff in Edinburgh area office was bright spot.
Worst: cancellation policy buried in the terms that customers receive when picking unit up. Less than 4 weeks since booking- £0 refund. Zero flexibility. None.
Run away. Do not book. Run away. Do nit book.
