Dunedin is the most southern “big city” in New Zealand. Situated at the head of the Otago Harbour on the southeast coast, it has a strong Scottish and Maori heritage. Places of interest to visit here include the nearby Otago Peninsula, with its colonies of albatrosses, sea lions and the rare yellow-eyed penguin. Victorian style Lanarch castle is well worth a visit with its 35 acres of gardens. Dunedin is a great place to start if you are planning a longer trip from the bottom of the South Island to the top of the North. With a major airport in Dunedin you can fly in, hire a campervan and head off across to the jaw-dropping beauty of the Fiordland National Park, and begin making your way North.
Campervan hire is plentiful in Dunedin. With rental available directly from the airport on arrival you can be off on your journey in no time
