Located in Cairns, Captain Billy’s 4WD Hire offers what they consider to be the safest 4WD hire vehicles for off-road conditions. The company supplies you with the resources to experience the real Cape York outback for yourself.
What Captain Billy's 4WD Hire Tells Us
Cape York Peninsula is beautifully situated in North Australia, which is just north of the tropical resort town of Cairns. And within the panoramic surroundings of Cairns nestles the adventurous Captain Billy's 4WD Hire that is a gem among outback enthusiasts. The company offers a range of reliable and durable 4WD's to take you off the road and experience the exciting Cape York self-drive beauty. These models, of course, do not come with any fancy features, but those that are essential for an outback adventure. During your holiday on wheels, you are welcome to most remote yet recognized roads, both sealed and unsealed as long as these are visible on the Hema Map and are safe for the vehicle and the passengers. And because of popular demand, the company now offers one-way travel for pick up and/or drop off in Bamaga.
Fleet
Having a selection of 4WD's is definitely a lure to those with hearts for adventure. The fleet ranges from 2 to 3 berth vehicles, and some models even come with child restraints so you can tag along your kids during your vacation. Equipped with cooking facilities like burner gas stove and gas bottles, crockery and cutlery, you will satisfy your hunger even in the wilderness. Not just that, you are provided with freshly laundered linen and certain units supply you with plastic bed covers to ensure you will sleep comfortably even in damp conditions. You can also add some camping extras like outdoor table, chairs, turbo tent and the like for your camping session. All vehicles are manual transmission that runs with diesel. And you don't have to worry because each vehicle has an unlimited mileage for a non-stop road trip.
Vehicles
Bush Ranger Roof Top Tent
First on the list, the Bush Ranger Roof Top Tent gives you the freedom to conquer the Cape York Peninsula through its unique features such as off road tyres (42 psi front & 54 psi rear), Old man Emu Off Road Suspension pack, long range fuel tanks, duel batteries, Bull Bar and Winch 9500xp, and roof rack. Because of the hardcore vehicle specifications, creek crossings could be part of your adventure, along with scenic touring, hiking, fishing and more. This high & low ratio 4WD allows you to backtrack the scenic roads in comfort with the help of some entertainment inclusion like radio and CD Player. Add at least $400 on top of your rate to enjoy these essentials: solar shower, portable gas stove, kitchen kit, camping table and chairs, turbo tent and awning.
Bush Camper
If you want a fancier outback trip, there's the Bush Camper that features air-conditioning. The vehicle is designed to sleep up two persons in utmost comfort. The pop-up roof gives the needed ventilation at night and makes the interior more spacious. You can also cook your favorite steak using the 2-burner gas stove provided with 2 gas bottles and chill some refreshments in the 32 litre fridge. However, there's no heating in the main cab so you need to depend on sleeping essentials at night.
Safari Bushranger
The Safari Bushranger provides almost the same facilities with the Bush Ranger Roof Top Tent, but of course, except the pop-top roof up. This dedicated 4WD accents significant features to explore the unpaved roads such as extensive fuel tank, factory fitted lockers and snorkels, duel batteries and more. You can also stack up some dollars to enjoy the Camping Pack that includes turbo tent, camping table and chairs, camp stretchers, solar shower, mini-fridge, and portable gas stove.
Bush Challenger
Sleeping up to 3 persons, the Bush Challenger provides one double bed and one single bed for an outback comfort. The pop-up roof makes it ideal for the warm summer nights. This vehicle comes with some panoramic windows, giving you splendid views of the open scenery. You are also provided with external cooking amenities, manual awning and fridge to make it more enjoyable.
Insurance
The standard insurance excess is at $5,000, which is the same amount for the security deposit. Aside from that, there's an additional of $1,200 excess for single vehicle damage. You have the choice to pick one of the two reduction options: $35 per day for $2,500 excess/ bond or $45 per day for $1,500 excess/ bond. However, the reduction options still do not include damage to tyres, under-body and overhead.
Reputation
Captain Billy's 4WD Hire is rather unique in terms of vehicle selection. However, it is for a particular market only. It caters those who are in for an exciting outback adventure without some fancy bells and whistles. So, 4WD enthusiasts are in great position to enjoy the company's fleet. The prices may not be that appealing, but could be worth if you're up to let go of the traditional road trip.
Summary
If you’re looking for an off the beaten track outback adventure, you should consider Captain Billy’s 4WD Hire. Best suited to those who are looking for vehicles for extreme off-road travel or 4WD enthusiasts.

Hi Steve
Obviously you are not interested in trying to solve this issue amicably.
As we reported on return the aerial broke on our trip on the first full day before we even left the tar so I am not sure how we could have caused in-pack damage.
Your extremely slow (almost 2 months) and arrogant response solidifies my case that this is by far the worst car hire experience of the many that I have had.
I still await the refund.

Tom has answer your questions, theirs no issues, the only issue I have is the damage to UHF radio aril you have done ( broken) $293 to replace and don’t tell me you didn’t do it because I go up to the Cape 4 times a year doing tag a longs, I have look at aril and has in-pack damage.
I have look into your complaints after arriving back from 16 day tag a long tour to the Cape and their is no justification to your complaints, etc punctures you are liable to fix, inside door light bulb you can buy one and we would refund.
Will refund $300 cleaning fee, have had a good talk to Tom about your issues and he’s done good job with addressing them to you.
R1 Handbrake was noted on Vehicle condition report which you signed
2 The tyre issue — I should have sent you off to get it repaired when you found a Tyre service open .
It was not a slow leak , a roofing screw was the cause .
I gave you the only 5 Stud wheel I had as a Spare .
3 The Rego was paid prior to due date — Receipt was in folder handed to you
This was also documented in Vehicle condition report
4 When Vehicle left here it was almost one thousand Kms prior to scheduled service ,
All oils and fluids ,Tyre pressures ,etc are checked prior to every hire
5 Confusion over CAMPING equipment hire was caused by one of your Passengers phoning here
and advising me you did not require the extras ,you required the Vehicle only ,
You were subsequently supplied everything you asked for on the day at no extra cost to you

Hi Tom
I have not received any answer from this email.
I think you should discount this hire by 25% ($889) and refund the cleaning costs($280.50), else I will be taking this issue further.

Hi Tom
I am not arguing the details, for an annual care-free holiday, the expensive car hire, was not anywhere near worth it.
I have never hired with so many issues – even cut-rate in 3rd world countries.
Come back to me with the refund (I am in Africa 1/8 to 21/8 so may not be reading emails often).

Hi Tom
I have not received any of the expected communication from you since we handed the car back last Saturday or the expected refund of the cleaning costs.
I assume there was no issue with the car or its cleanliness or you would have mentioned it earlier.
Just to recap, I have paid you:
26/3 $500.00
21/6 $3055.72
30/6 $280.50
————
Total $3836.22
We were not happy with the car, due to the following problems:
1. No handbrake
2. Different size spare tyre
3. Slow puncture
4. Expired rego sticker
5. Past service due
6. Confusion over camping equipment booking
I spent the first week of the holiday wondering what would go wrong next.
I am someone who strongly believes in feedback to companies about good & bad service & that this car hire was the worst I have ever had by far. Your prices were not greatly different to other companies I checked, but I would not accept this kind of a car hire from anyone.
I think you should discount this hire by 25% ($889) and refund the cleaning costs($280.50), else I will be taking this issue further.
Thank you .
