About Southern Campers

Southern Campers is a relatively small yet dedicated company that offers a range of modern motorhomes in their depot in Gore, Southland, NZ. Since their main location isn't situated in a more popular NZ city, they allow campervan delivery to Queenstown and Invercargill for an additional fee. The campervan rentals are not that expensive, plus you'll be getting a complete package vehicle with some complimentary goodies.

Since you have the option to go around NZ's scenic landscapes, it's best to know ahead some NZ rules when it comes to freedom camping. Here's a tool you can make use of before starting your road trip―Freedom Camping in New Zealand.

Fleet

Highlighting a fleet of self-contained motorhomes, Southern Campers has three campervan options, all of which are modern models of Fiat Ducato and VW. Since all are self-contained vehicles, each unit is furnished with nice sleeping beds, toilet and shower, and fully-equipped kitchen. Not only that, cooking equipment, solar panels, and linen including pillows, towels, comforter, and facecloth are all provided in the rental. These campervans cater couples to small families.

Vehicles

2 Berth Campervan

Let's begin with the 2 berth, manual campervan that is quite spacious for two. The unit comes with four doors for easy access and big, electronic windows for convenient, panoramic viewing. The area at the back acts as the dining lounge during the daytime, then transforms into a large queen bed or two single beds at night. There are plenty of overhead cabinets for storage. The kitchen is furnished with a sink, 2 burner cooker, and 12v fridge. Also, outdoor table and chairs are provided.

4 Berth Campervan

A bigger and roomier campervan, this 4 berth unit provides two sleeping places—overhead double bed and rear queen bed or 2 singles.  The U-shaped rear lounge comes with an adjustable table, lots of overhead cabinets and a DVD player.  There's a seating area at the back of the driver and passenger's seat. Expect for some upgraded features for this family motorhome, including an onboard kitchen with 240v / 12v fridge, ring cooktop, solar panel, gas hot water, and awning.

6 Berth Double Cab Campervan

The biggest campervan on the fleet is the 6 berth built on an automatic unit with alloy wheels, central locking, and electric windows. This unit is quite elegant with some step-up amenities like fog lamp, immobilizer, TV/ DVD player, electric awning, and outdoor speakers. Aside from the 12v diesel heater in the rear, there's another 240v for extra comfort. Sleeping areas inside are located at the cab-over, rear lounge, and area at the back of the driver's seat.

6 Berth Walkthrough

A new campervan on offer is this 6 berth that now comes with a walkthrough. This means there's no need for you to step outside to get to the living room. You simply walk through from the cab to the living quarters. Also, this one comes with a large U-shaped lounge located at the rear and a side kitchen.

Insurance

The insurance liability amounts to $3,500, which will be collected 7 days prior to collection of your rented vehicle. The company offers a liability deduction, which reduces the excess to $500. The bond will be paid via credit card.

Reputation

Southland Campers is a nice choice if you're looking for a small and decent campervan rental in the southern part of NZ. This isn't like those bigger companies from bigger cities; hence, you can expect for a cheaper rate and more personalized rental, including some complimentary goodies like chocolate and wine! They may not be that popular and their location is quite far from the CBD or airports, but they give a good run for your money because of their fleet of modern, self-contained motorhomes at competitive prices.

Summary

Southland Campers is a good alternative for those who want to try something different from the normal campervan rentals in Auckland or Christchurch. With a depot in the southern NZ, this small campervan rental in Gore makes sure that you'll experience freedom camping without breaking the bank.
