Exploring the open roads or the city streets with a classic Volkswagen Westfalia is a definite a head-turner, much more if you are certified old soul.
About Radtastic Voyage
Radtastic Voyage is a small rental in Santa Monica that is run by a couple. The company is never tainted with the tough competition and continues to offer one rental option, their blue baby— a Volkswagen Westfalia. There's no travel zone, except for Mexico, and they even allow you to explore Joshua Tree (with their permission). They claim as the only vintage VW rental in Los Angeles County, so that's quite an enticing platform. Pick-up and drop-off are done at their one and only depot. One thing that is nice about renting from them is they do not keep regular business hours, which means you get to talk to real owners anytime instead of monotonous operators and unfriendly staff.
Fleet
A VW Westafalia as your home on wheels is a mix of fun and excitement. Hitting the road with a classical unit like a Volkswagen with a 1930 year model and 1970 technical advancement will definitely need a dose of patience. Hence, familiarity with the unit's feature is somehow needed. Remember, you aren't driving a fast and posh van so you need to adjust accordingly. Starting, you must not exceed 60 mph and take note of the 20 miles per day limit mileage. The camperavan, however, is an automatic transmission, which is a nice feature, considering the older fit-out.
Vehicle
The 1981 Vanagon Westfalia or fondly called as, 'The Westie', is a 4 berth campervan that sleeps two at the full size bed and two at the pop-top. Inside, you'll be greeted with campervan amenities including a dining/ living room couch that transforms into a comfy double bed, lots of storage spaces and a small kitchen with stainless sink and propane stove. And there's no better way to cook your meals with the inclusion of pots, pans, cooking utensils and the like inside the unit. Also, you are provided with few extras like flashlight, lantern, hammock and bluetooth speaker to make your trip more convenient. But, do take note that there's no shower and toilet on-board!
Insurance
To push through with your rental, you must have your own insurance policy and provide a binder to Radtastic Voyage. The company, as of this writing, does not have insurance options, whether comprehensive or collision insurance coverage for your rental. So, insurance is a requirement as well as the $500 total security deposit at the time of pick-up.
Reputation
Radtastic Voyage lets you experience a unique and classical ride with their older yet reliable Volkswagen Westfalias. Since they only have one rental option, the owners dedicate their time in maintaining the fleet and providing friendlier, personalized service. However, these vintage units aren't eye candies for bigger families looking for a ultra posh holiday. The campervan is good for classical travellers up to 4, who would want to have an unassuming yet meaningful ride.
Summary
The Westie from Radtastic Voyage is a unique campervan unit that takes 4 people into a vintage ride in a modern setting. Plus, these VWs are reasonably priced!
