Byron Bay is a 'must visit' place for anyone doing a road trip between Sydney and Brisbane. It is the eastern most point of mainland Australia and was famous for a long time as being the town all the hippies would move to. The true hippies have moved on now but the vibe of Byron Bay still has a relaxed and easy feel to it. It is the kind of place you just want to stay in for a while. It is popular all year round and also hosts a number of festivals throughout the year were numbers in the town swell to insane levels.
There is only 1 campervan hire branch IN Byron Bay, and another a little way south in Ballina where the airport is or a few hours north in The Gold Coast. There are only a few companies that are servicing the area directly and they aim for the traveller who wants to see more of the area rather than those who plan to travel on the few thousand km's to Cairns or Melbourne. Generally, most road trippers have stopping in here have sourced their campervans from a different city and are only passing through. But once you get there, you probably just want to stay one more day than you planned. You just do.
