When you touch down in New Zealand, staying connected is one of the first things you'll sort out. You'll need data for maps, accommodation bookings, social media, and keeping in touch with people back home. The good news: New Zealand has three strong mobile networks and competitive prepaid plans that make it easy and affordable for travellers.
Your Connectivity Options in New Zealand
Realistically, here are the main options for staying connected on your road trip:
- Global roaming on your home contract
- WiFi bundled with your campervan hire
- A local prepaid SIM card or eSIM from a New Zealand telco
Global Roaming
For short trips of 5 days or less, global roaming on your home contract may be the most convenient option — no setup required. But for anything longer, roaming costs stack up fast. Even a $5/day roaming add-on comes to $150 for a month. Data limits are usually stingy and overages are expensive. For stays of 2 weeks or more, a local SIM is almost always the better value.
WiFi With Your Campervan Hire
Some campervan hire companies include WiFi hotspot options or offer them as add-ons. This can be handy for multiple-device households, but in-vehicle WiFi is typically limited in data, may not work in remote areas, and ties you to coverage only while in the van. A local SIM card gives you personal, portable connectivity everywhere your phone goes.
Local SIM Card or eSIM — The Best Option for Most Travellers
For any trip of a week or longer, a local New Zealand prepaid SIM (or eSIM if your phone supports it) is the smartest move. You get a New Zealand number, proper local data rates, and freedom to use your phone anywhere on the network.
New Zealand's Three Mobile Networks
Three carriers run the mobile networks in New Zealand. All other providers (MVNOs) piggyback on one of these three:
- Spark — New Zealand's largest carrier. Best 4G/5G coverage nationwide, including rural and remote areas. Winner of OpenSignal's 4G Coverage Experience award. Offers eSIMs as well as physical SIM cards at airport stores.
- One NZ (formerly Vodafone NZ) — Strong urban 5G/4G performance, especially in Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch. Competitive pricing on Travel SIM packs. Note: Vodafone rebranded to One NZ in 2023.
- 2degrees — Great value with a simple "Unlimited Travel SIM" covering unlimited data, calls, and texts within NZ. Available in plans from 3 days to 30 days.
MVNOs on these networks include Skinny (on Spark), Warehouse Mobile (on 2degrees), and others — occasionally useful for budget-conscious long-term travellers, but for a typical tourist stay the main three carriers' travel packs are usually the better choice.
Current Prepaid Travel Plans (2026)
Spark NZ Travel Packs
Spark offers NZ Travel Packs from NZ$25 to NZ$112, covering a range of data, local minutes, texts, and some international call minutes. Plans span 5 days through 30+ days. Spark is the top pick if you're heading to rural areas, national parks, or the remote South Island — their coverage footprint is the widest in the country. eSIMs available at Auckland Airport and major stores.
- 5-day pack: ~NZ$25–$30
- 14-day pack: ~NZ$60–$70
- 30-day pack: ~NZ$112
One NZ (formerly Vodafone) Travel SIMs
One NZ Travel SIM packs run NZ$25 to NZ$86 and include data, local calls, texts, and limited international minutes. Strong performance in major cities and tourist hubs. Kiosks in the duty-free area and arrivals hall at Auckland Airport.
- Entry pack: ~NZ$25
- Mid-range pack: ~NZ$50–$60
- Top-end pack: NZ$86
2degrees Unlimited Travel SIM
2degrees has the simplest offer for travellers: one "Unlimited Travel SIM" with unlimited data, calls, and texts within New Zealand, in seven duration options:
| Duration | Price (NZD) |
|---|---|
| 3 days | NZ$24 |
| 7 days | NZ$35 |
| 10 days | NZ$50 |
| 14 days | NZ$60 |
| 18 days | NZ$70 |
| 21 days | NZ$80 |
| 30 days | NZ$95 |
2degrees is the best value option for heavy data users or anyone who doesn't want to think about data limits. Note that 2degrees SIM cards must be purchased in-store (not online for tourists), so grab one when you land.
Quick Recommendation by Trip Length
| Trip length | Best option | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1–3 days | 2degrees 3-day Unlimited (NZ$24) | Cheapest unlimited short-term option |
| 4–10 days | Spark 5-day or 2degrees 7-day (~NZ$25–$35) | Good data, Spark adds eSIM option |
| 2–3 weeks | Spark 14-day (~NZ$60–$70) or One NZ 14-day (~NZ$50–$60) | Best balance of data and price; Spark for rural coverage |
| 1 month | 2degrees 30-day Unlimited (NZ$95) | Unlimited data, best value for heavy users |
Where to Get Your SIM Card
- Auckland Airport — Spark and One NZ have kiosks in the duty-free area (before passport control) and stores in the international arrivals hall. 2degrees has a store in the Take Home area of arrivals. Buying in the duty-free area can save ~15% on GST.
- In-city stores — Spark, One NZ, and 2degrees stores are in every major city. Also available in supermarkets (Countdown, New World, Pak'nSave) and many convenience stores.
- Online before you travel — Spark now offers eSIMs that can be activated remotely. Third-party providers (SimCorner, Holafly, Airalo) also sell NZ eSIM plans you can install before you depart.
eSIM vs Physical SIM
If your phone supports eSIM (most smartphones from 2019 onwards do), an eSIM is the most convenient option — no need to swap out your existing SIM, and you can activate it before you land. Spark is the leader for eSIM in New Zealand and sells them at airport stores. Third-party eSIM providers like Airalo and Holafly offer data-only eSIM plans for New Zealand on Spark, One NZ, and 2degrees networks.
Making International Calls
Most travellers use WhatsApp, FaceTime, Skype, or Messenger over their data plan for free international calls. If you need traditional international calls, check whether your chosen plan includes international minutes (Spark Travel Packs do for select countries). Otherwise, international calling add-ons are available from all three carriers.
Network Coverage
- Spark — Best overall 4G/5G coverage; best choice for rural travel, national parks, and the South Island's more remote areas.
- One NZ — Fast in cities and major tourist hubs; very competitive with Spark in urban 5G performance.
- 2degrees — Great coverage in cities and towns; slightly behind in very remote areas.
The Wrap Up
New Zealand's three main carriers — Spark, One NZ (formerly Vodafone), and 2degrees — all offer solid prepaid travel options for visitors. For most road trippers:
- Heading into rural NZ or the South Island? → Spark Travel Pack for best coverage.
- Staying urban (Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch)? → One NZ or 2degrees for better value.
- Heavy data user, long stay? → 2degrees Unlimited Travel SIM (NZ$95/month) is hard to beat.
Pick up a SIM at the airport when you land and you'll be online within minutes of arrival. New Zealand's scenery is too good not to share — make sure you have the data to do it.
